Regina Belle / Reachin' Back (1995)
「"歌唱力"という点で最も崇拝する女性Vo.は？」と言われれば、その一人として迷うことなく挙げるのはRegina Belle。そんな彼女がフィラデルフィア・ソウル（70年代を中心に一世を風靡したソウル）のスタンダードをカバーした作品である。
ダンスチューンに仕上げられた曲もいくつかあるが、やはり聴きこみ度が高いのはバラード。中でも名曲"You Are Everything"(Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye)で魅せる粘りつくような情感は、オリジナルを超えたと断言してもよい特筆モノである。まるで恋人である彼女が隣で腕を絡み付けているかのような錯覚を覚える、輪郭の際立ったソウルフルな歌声。その存在感は"Make Me Feel Brand New"(Stylistics)のカバーでも、しっかりと味わうことができる。（個人的にはミディアムバラードの"Just Don't Want to Be Lonely"もイチオシ）
これほどの歌唱力を持つ女性Vo.でありながら、Whitney Houston等の陰で中堅扱いのまま音楽シーンの表舞台から消えていったのは残念でならない。スポットライトひとつの中で一声あげれば、全ての聴衆が静寂を取り戻す。極上のブランデーのような、言葉を必要としない味わい深さを持つ稀有なシンガーのカバー集は、女性Vo.ファンであれば必ず耳にしておきたいところだ。
